At Bethesda Home and School for the Blind, we believe that every student, regardless of physical ability, deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and contribute meaningfully to society. Each year, we sponsor 25 blind students across Nigeria, supporting them in their pursuit of university education and their dreams.
This year, we began this journey with five exceptional students in Lagos, assisting them as they took the crucial first step: writing the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination. These students, chosen for their resilience, intelligence, and determination, exemplify the principle that disability is not inability.
Preparing for JAMB is a significant undertaking for any student. For visually impaired candidates, the process can be even more challenging due to limited access to tailored resources, assistive technologies, and inclusive support systems. Our support extended beyond covering exam fees; we ensured each student had access to Braille JAMB materials, specialized tutoring and mentoring, logistical support to and from exam centers, and emotional and psychological encouragement throughout the process.
The examination spanned two days, during which our students demonstrated remarkable focus and determination. A highlight of this period was their meeting with the Registrar of JAMB, Professor Ishaq Oloyede. In a heartfelt address, Professor Oloyede shared words of encouragement and presented the students with Braille slates, styluses, meals, and tokens of appreciation. This gesture underscored JAMB's commitment to inclusivity and support for students with disabilities.
After the examinations, the students returned to Bethesda, carrying with them not just the experience of the exams but also the inspiration and motivation from their interaction with Professor Oloyede. Their journey is a testament to what can be achieved when support, opportunity, and determination converge.
We believe that true empowerment begins with opportunity. By investing in these five young scholars, we are not only investing in their futures but also contributing to a more inclusive and educated Nigeria.
As they take this brave first step towards higher education, we invite you to follow their journey, celebrate their victories, and be part of a movement that champions access, equity, and hope. Together, we are not just helping blind students gain admission into university; we are opening doors, breaking barriers, and lighting the path to a brighter future.
